  1.            10 out of 10 DRIVING TEST ... MANUAL (Demo version)
  2.            ---------------------------------------------------
  3.
  4.                             INTRODUCTION
  5.                             ------------
  6.
  7. 10 out of 10 Driving Test consists of six games plus a unique test
  8. designed so that you can have fun as you learn, revise or test your
  9. knowledge on many of the essential facts of driving and road signs. You
  10. can choose the specific area(s) that you wish to work on and progress at
  11. your own speed - your progress is automatically recorded as you play the
  12. games.
  13.
  14. To add to your fun you can even choose one of the six categories of
  15. trivia questions, or test your skills on the continental levels. If you
  16. want to quiz yourself on the 1000's of questions in the suite, but
  17. without the games, that too is possible - details are in this guide.
  18.
  19. The games are both educational and fun, with many elements built in to
  20. make this the most enjoyable way to check up on many of the theoretical
  21. parts of driving. There are, for example, two ways that you see
  22. progress:
  23.
  24. * The Achievement Record: Your aim is to turn this completely green by
  25.   gaining full marks at the various levels.
  26. * The High Score Tables: In addition to your mark, these take into
  27.   account many other game elements like speed and bonus points.
  28.
  29. The Achievement Record shows you, at a glance, how you are progressing
  30. and you can see which topics need further practice. Once you've reached
  31. a high enough standard you can Take the Test - pass and fail
  32. certificates are issued!
  33.
  34.
  35.                          GETTING STARTED
  36.                          ---------------
  37.
  38. When you first load 10 out of 10 you'll see the Main Menu. To make a
  39. selection move the mouse pointer to the appropriate option, which will
  40. highlight, and click on it. At the bottom is the player's name - you'll
  41. see it is set to None to begin with. The first thing you should do is
  42. enter your own name by using the New Player option. Type in your name,
  43. press Enter to return to the Main Menu - your name will now be displayed
  44. at the bottom.
  45.
  46. The top six choices on the Main Menu are the games themselves. Only
  47. Patience! and Signpost are available on the demo and when you choose one
  48. of them from the Main Menu you are presented with a Game Menu. Before
  49. clicking on the top option of this menu (play game), look at the other
  50. options that allow you to customise the game to your own needs and
  51. skills.
  52.
  53. To change one of the options move the mouse pointer to it and click to
  54. cycle through the various possibilities. The options are set so that you
  55. can start playing and enjoying the games straight away. However, for the
  56. most fun, they need changing to suit your own preferences (which your
  57. computer remembers for you ready for next time on the full version).
  58.
  59. Here are the remaining options that you'll find on the Main Menu:
  60.
  61. Player Information
  62. ------------------
  63.
  64. You choose this when you want to find out how well you are doing or to
  65. select the category or categories that you want to be quizzed on. Your
  66. Achievement Record will be shown - you should try to turn it all green
  67. by playing the games with all categories except j and k selected. The
  68. categories are selected or de-selected by moving your mouse pointer over
  69. the list at the foot of the screen and clicking on them. Return to the
  70. Main Menu by clicking anywhere else.
  71.
  72. To start with, the boxes on the chart are all grey and they each change
  73. colour and have letters put in them when you play and score in the
  74. games. The letters show the categories with which your rating was
  75. achieved. The colour each box turns to depends on how many questions you
  76. get right and not on your score - that depends how well you play the
  77. games too! Note that you will only be assessed if you have answered 10
  78. or more questions. Here is what the colours mean:
  79.
  80. * Grey: If no letter is shown in a box you have not answered 10
  81.   questions at that level. However if letters are shown you achieved 0%
  82.   on those categories - you know nothing about driving!
  83.
  84. * Red: You have played the game but achieved under 50%. Take the red
  85.   as a warUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU speed of answering,
  86. bonuses and so on. To rise up a High Score Table you have to become
  87. proficient with the academic challenges in the package and also apply
  88. knowledge with accuracy and speed.
  89.
  90. The game element built into 10 out of 10 makes you want to keep
  91. practising until this proficiency is reached. As you play the games the
  92. on-screen display helps you monitor your progress. Along with your name
  93. and the level, a pair of numbers in the form 06 of 20 is shown. This
  94. means that you have chosen to answer 20 questions and you are on the
  95. sixth. The number of questions you have answered correctly is shown by
  96. the number of Marks - you get one mark for each correct answer.
  97.
  98. The final two numbers are your Score and your Bonus. As any question is
  99. displayed you will be given time to read it before your bonus starts to
  100. count down. The bonus starts at 25 and is reset every time you answer a
  101. question correctly.
  102.
  103.

  118.
  119.                              THE GAMES
  120.                              ---------
  121.
  122. In all the games you must answer questions on your selected category or
  123. categories correctly before you can make another move. If you only want
  124. to answer questions, a feature is built into Rear Mirror to allow this
  125. (full version only).
  126.
  127. The choices that are common to all the games are:

  137. This lets you view the high score table. All your scores are shown in

  139. by playing the games with options set to the more difficult
  140. alternatives.
  141.
  142. Number of Questions
  143. -------------------
  144.
  145. Make sure you have enough questions to complete the challenge. The
  146. number of questions you select and the way you play the game will
  147. determine your score. In all games (except Patience!) you can have from
  148. 20 to 50 questions in steps of 5. In Patience! you can have from 24 to

  173.
  174. This takes you back to the Main Menu.
  175.
  176.
  177. Here are the rules of the games. There are also details of the numerous
  178. options that youæll find to allow you to customise the games to your own
  179. preferences:
  180.
  181.
  182.                      WORD PARK (Full version only)
  183.                      -----------------------------
  184.
  185. This is a game of word power where answering questions will reveal
  186. letters which allows you to guess the hidden word. Every time you answer
  187. a question correctly you can uncover another square in the grid.
  188.
  189. Words can be chosen from: motoring terms, cars and bikes, car parts or
  190. motor sport. Choose ordered letters, or make the game more difficult by
  191. selecting jumbled (you solve the anagram), hidden character (decide what
  192. letter the ? covers) or bogus letter (spot and ignore the red herring).
  193.
  194.
  195.                     CLUNK CLICK (Full version only)
  196.                     -------------------------------
  197.
  198. This old favourite memory game will keep you on your toes as you match
  199. the road signs to their meanings. After answering a question correctly
  200. you will be given the chance to uncover two cards.
  201.
  202. You must try to uncover pairs of cards that match - description to
  203. picture. You can choose between warnings signs, orders, others and
  204. continental. Other features include automatic matching (you decide
  205. whether any description and picture uncovered match), mobile cards (any
  206. covered cards will occasionally change places to add to your challenge),
  207. split deal (all picture cards will be dealt to the bottom half of the
  208. screen) and a viewing time to allow you to see the initial position of
  209. all the cards at the start of the game.
  210.
  211.
  212.                               PATIENCE!
  213.                               ---------
  214.
  215. Answer the question to turn a card. This is a new twist to the classic
  216. card game which will check your powers of observation.
  217.
  218. Rules
  219. -----
  220.
  221. Your aim is to collect the four suits into ascending stacks, starting
  222. from the aces, at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Valid
  223. cards can be moved onto the appropriate stack of a matching suit and
  224. once a card is placed on one of the stacks it cannot be moved.
  225.
  226. In the other piles of cards, any exposed card can be moved (along with
  227. any cards below it) when it can be placed on a card of the opposite
  228. colour with a value which is one pip higher. If, by doing this, you are
  229. left with a card that is face down it can be turned over by clicking on
  230. it. Only kings can be moved to vacant columns.
  231.
  232. To reveal the top card of the pile at the bottom left of the screen you
  233. must click on it, but you will have to answer a question correctly
  234. before it is uncovered. If it is suitable it can be placed under one of
  235. the exposed cards or on a stack, but if the card cannot be used it will
  236. remain in the pile of viewed cards. When all the cards have been
  237. revealed, clicking on the empty pile lets you run through them
  238. again.
  239.
  240. Once you have answered 24 questions correctly you can keep going through
  241. the pack until the game is over without answering any more questions.
  242. Thereafter, if you cannot complete the game, press Escape if you want to
  243. give up and discover how well you performed.
  244.
  245. Options

  252.
  253. The default here is 24 questions. Note that if you opt for 24 questions
  254. you must get them all correct to finish the game! Increasing the number
  255. of questions increases your margin for error and this is reflected by a
  256. lower score per correct answer.
  257.
  258.
  259.                   REAR MIRROR (Full version only)
  260.                   -------------------------------

  262. Gamble your bonus and go for more as your mental agility is really put
  263. to the test in this unique game.
  264.
  265. Each time you answer three questions correctly you can have a go at
  266. playing Rear Mirror. Memorise the sequence of numbers that you see
  267. appearing in the mirror and then enter them in the correct order. Other
  268. options include setting the length of time that each number is displayed
  269. in the mirror, how many numbers you will have to remember, the length of
  270. each number and whether the number is reflected. You can also select
  271. BROKEN if you want to answer questions without playing the game.
  272.
  273.
  274.                               SIGNPOST
  275.                               --------

  278. signs in the shortest number of tries.
  279.
  280. Rules
  281. -----
  282.
  283. Every time you answer a question correctly, you can uncover another
  284. square in the grid. Do this by clicking your mouse when the moving
  285. pointers are in line with the square you wish to reveal.
  286.
  287. If you think you know the sign, choose your guess from the list
  288. displayed, otherwise click on the Next Question box. To scroll through
  289. the list click on the up and down arrows located to the right of the
  290. window. The single arrow scrolls the window a line at a time, while the
  291. double arrows scroll the whole window.
  292.
  293. When you have answered the selected number of questions, if part of the
  294. latest sign is uncovered or you have answered the last question
  295. correctly, the sign will be revealed and you will be given a final
  296. chance to try to name it.
  297.

  309.
  310. Pointer speed
  311. -------------
  312.
